                                                                                                            30 January 2010

Hello again.

The Society of “Other-Maine” Miniature Enthusiasts met again on 16 January and played a 15mm Command Decision game from France in 1944. This was the playtest of the game I plan to run at Huzzah! The US infantry Regimental Combat Team was kept from doing much on its right by the onslaught of the SS Panzergrenadiers, while the left was stymied by accurate artillery fire before the bridge. The SS were pretty well spent by the time the US armored Combat Command could get to the area under attack, so it was considered that the attack was stopped. At the same time, enough US infantry had been lost that the assault on the town and hill would not be resumed any time soon. I thank everybody who played in the game, and I took away some thoughts and some good advice from gamers (thanks, Pete Dalton and Bill Drisko) as to how to improve the scenario.

We will meet again at 10 am on Saturday, 13 February 2010, at the Levant Church in Levant, Maine. The general directions are to go out Union Street from Bangor until you come to the church in the middle of the town of Levant. I think even I could do that. The game will be a 1:2400 USN/IJN naval battle from the Aleutians. The Japanese will be sending naval help to the garrison at Attu, while the Americans will be trying to stop them. The results of this game will affect the next one we play as well.

The March game will be Steven Jonason running a 15mm Command Decision game of the US recapture of Attu. If the Japanese win the naval battle, the resistance will be stiffer than if they lose. The April meeting is tentatively planned as a 15mm American Civil War game using my house rules. The May meeting is even more tentatively planned as a 28mm Old West game. In June, we will use NOR-CON, the Bangor Game Day, as the meeting.

That brings me to the next subject, upcoming gaming events. There will be a Game Day in Bath on 27 February at the Winter Street Center in Bath. The major event, Huzzah!, is a convention running from 30 April to 2 May at the Holiday Inn West in South Portland. NOR-CON, the Bangor area Game Day, will take place on 5 June at the church in Levant where we will meet for the 13 February game. I strongly suggest that you attend as many of these events as you can, both because they are great fun and because a lot of folks are working very hard to make them succeed. Also, if you know anyone who might be interested at all in the hobby, these events are a perfect way to introduce them to what we do.

Have a great Groundhog Day and I hope to see you on the 13th.

                                                                                                Peace.

I've seen a naval game mentioned before.  What rules do you guys use for WW2 naval combat?  Has anyone used GHQ's Micronauts:The Game?

I've got General Quarters III and an extensive line of 1/3000 ships. I like the system but lack interested players, not enough ex swabbys at CRG.

Wayne,
I'd be interested and I think I could rope-in Johnny for a game (you met him at Chris' house during the Stones River battle).  Let me know if you'd like to try to schedule something!

Bob,

I'm available most week nights within reason and weekends when not on duty. My setup is portable with a sea scape 6 x 8 mat so we would need some room to play. Crossroads would work but I'm not chained to it. Any ideas? How about you Ken interested?

Wayne,

I'm interested but it depends on the night and how far I have to travel.  Crossroads is about an hour from me.  (I'm close to North Conway in NH).  My wife works many evenings and her schedule changes weekly.

I may be i9nterested in trying something navy oriented although I usually lean towards land warfare. I'm in Parsonsfield Ken which is about 20 mins east of North Conway but I'm definitely up for a game at Crossroads pretty much any weeknight if you guys set something up. Basically I'm a wargaming slut. I'll go anywhere and do anything. -Mark

Wayne,
I have a call in to John, waiting to hear back as to what would be a good night for him.  I spoke with my CinC (aka the wife) and got a green light to let her commute home with one of my daughters some weekday after work.  I'll keep you posted.
Mark, I'm in Limerick!  Heck, we could hit each other with snowballs without leaving our yards!  Give me a call!  Best time is between 5 and 9 PM.  793-8209.

I hear you week nights are tough to line up, how about the weekend? As long as its not tournament day at Crossroads we could get room for a game. Yeah I know Mark you work weekends.  I'm in Bridgton so not to far from N. Conway but a ways from Parsonsfield.

Oh BTW didn't mean to hijack the thread SOMMEgrin
