Ancients/Medieval gaming
Hello all,
Whilst looking back at the game schedule for Huzzah 2010 I took note that games representing the title of my post were few in number. Although few in number they were awesome in appearance!! But that does have me wondering, what is the interest level for ancient/medieval games to members of this forum? What rules are the most popular with you? Did Sabis, with it's magnificent grandure and scale, dissuade more from running an ancient game? Finally, if a tournement of ancient/medieval gaming was to be run at Huzzah 2011 would you rather it be with a more "simpler" set of rules ala DBA or Basic Impetus or with something more "involved" like Field of Glory or Armati?

Hi Ken,
I do the high middle ages game (Jean D'Arc and Baron's War). I use house rules I've developed for the past thirty years called "Dogs of War". My basing is relatively unique- 40mm X 80mm with 4 cav or 5-12 infantry to the stand. I am not interested in re-mounting them again for the fifth time..... but if they can be used for a different rules set, then I'm game for anything medievaI. I received a history degree in medieval history in 1994, the best part of which was a year spent in Winchester, England.
I also have Vikings, Saxons, Arabs and Carolingians for skirmish scale gaming. I also use house rules for that collection called "Viking Raid".
I am happy to take these collections/games on the road once I am through with my Radiography studies- sometime next spring. I'm not sure I'll do anything next year for HUZZAH! due to that schedule... but if someone wants to use those collections to run events at HUZZAH! 2011, I'd be happy to bring them.
I am also happy to run games down here in Amesbury, MA when anyone can fill a car w/ gamers and come this way- I love showing off "The War Room" to all comers.

Hello.
My interest outstrips my collection at this point. I have Romans and Celts plus some galleys, but that's the lot. My best friend Steven Jonason has Hittites, Egyptians, and Syrians for very Ancient warfare and a good collection of ancient Greeks for the Peloponnesian War.
I love the stuff and personally like Terry Gore's Ancient Warfare. Steven uses Armati, which is also very good.
We have used many a set over the years with most of them being outside (sometimes WAY outside) what we want and enjoy.
One of my pet peeves here is that most rules are designed to let Aztecs fight Hittites and such for tournaments and the like. I am far too history-minded to get into that, but the rules are written differently if that is the plan.
Gary Gygax had a set a number of years ago that broke Ancients and Medievals into different eras, with the stated proviso that playing "across periods" would not work well because the rules were designed for play with historical opponents. That was refreshing.

Well I'm probably best know for running and writing Medieval games. Starting with Knighthood and The Middle Ages and then Day or Battle which is up to its 3rd edition and the 4th is in the planning stage. I ran 1 or 2 games at Huzzah using my 90mm collections and I have run both 90mm and 25mm at the day cons in Bath. My personal period of interest is later Feudal but I find most gamers like the 100 years Wars and Wars of The Roses. My bases are standard WRG so any DBX players troops will fit right in. I may run a 25mm game at the next day con in Bath if there is room. I was a tad late with my paperwork :)

I like WAB, and I am also partial to Basic Impetus. I also have a very nice set of Viking/Dark Ages skirmish rules that I've written. I''ll play most anything. Chris has some EXCELLENT rules and always puts on great games. I'm open to most anything, though I only own Roan/Barbarian and Late Roman armies for WAB and can put together stuff for Basic Impetus.
