24 July 2010 notice
24 July 2010 Hello again.
The
Society of “Other-Maine” Miniature Enthusiasts met again on 10 July and
played
an interesting 25mm English Civil War game. The battle was based on the
Battle
of Roundway Down, where the Royalists defeated the Parliamentarians
rather
soundly and lifted the siege of Devizes. In our game, the Royalists and
Parliamentarians fought a seesaw battle where the advantage went from
one side
to the other several times, usually pretty quickly. By the time we had
to call
the game, each side had the advantage on their respective right flank,
which
made for an interesting situation. We decided that Parliament would
probably
lift the siege and move away after dark, but the battle itself was a
draw. I
want to thank those who came for a great time, although I don’t fully
understand how so many bulkie rolls (17) were eaten by 4 players,
especially
when you factor in the half a crock pot of beef stew that was also
consumed.
We
will meet once again at 10am on Saturday, 14 August 2010, at the Forest
Avenue
Congregational Church on the corner of Forest and Stillwater Avenues in
Bangor.
Tim sickles will be running a Napoleonics game using the Napoleonic
version of
the Fire and Fury rules. I have tried
these when Steven Jonason ran a game a while back, and they really work
well.
Combine that with Tim’s gamemastering skills, and this should be a great
time.
As always, expect lunch to be served as well (NOT salt beef and weevilly
biscuits, though).
There
are a number of games on the list for coming months. The September
meeting will
be Pete Dalton running a Colonial game. In October, I will run a
sailing-ship
naval game of smaller ships trying to get to sea from Boston in the face
of the
British blockade. The November game is tentatively planned as a 15mm
Seven
Years War game using the SYW version of Fire
and Fury. As always, let me know if you have a game you want to play
or
run.
During
our game last time, a fellow from the Maine Infantry Museum came by.
They would
like us to run some games (he used the term “tournament”, but when we
talked it
was obvious that he was looking at more of a Game Day) at the Museum.
They are
trying to raise awareness of the museum itself and are starting a fund
to
create a scholarship for Infantrymen and/or their survivors. I offered
to pass
the word and also to get my church involved if possible.
I
also want to pass the word that there will be another Game Day
get-together in
Bath on 16 October at the Winter Street Center. These are great fun and a
particularly good way to get new gamers involved in the hobby. It’s a
lot more
relaxed than the Huzzah! Convention, which is a real showpiece but
rather
hectic at times. The Game Days are more of a group of friends gathering
to play
games and talk to each other and anyone unfamiliar with the hobby. Most
games
are great for kids, there’s a flea market (dangerous) and a bookseller
(VERY
dangerous) as well as snacks and truly great people. You should come to
this if
you can.
Have
a great summer and I hope to see you in August!
Peace.

Here's the latest club notice. The meal for August is a variation of Chicken
Marengo with French bread.
I am planning a major Command Decision 15mm World War II game for
the November meeting (13 November), which will be an double-blind
infantry engagement in the bocage with regimental commanders
separated from the board and running functions from a map. More to
follow.
