Regarding the Impetus Tournament for 2012.....

I have offered to run the tournament, and Jim Flanagan seems to think that that is a good idea. Anyone else interested in helping out is welcome to contact me.

  Couple of questions.

1.)  Should we again rely on Basic Impetus for the tournament, or should we use the full Impetus rules with a 300 point limit? Some high points limit?

2.) Although we will be using 25/28mm minis, I know some folks have 1/72(20mm) minis. personally, I have no problem with this in this tournament providing the same bases are used. Anyone else care about this?

3.) In the main Impetus rules, the author makes a suggestion that for those using 25/28mm minis, they might consider replacing the 2cm/u movement rate with 1"/u. I think this is an excellent idea. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

4.) Should we again limit the armies to 7th century and earlier? 11th century and earlier? the latter would allow folks with Saxon/Viking armies to consider joining in.

5.) Should we put together some Republican Roman/Celtic/Germanic armies from the Sabis figures with sabots for those who might like to play but aren't able to provide minis yet?

Tim - here are my thoughts on the issues that you bring up.

1.  I think that we should run a full Impetus game with 300 point armies.  We have a full year to paint a few more troops and play a few games and I think most people thought Basic was a good intro and now want to move to the full rules.

2.  I would advertise this as a 25mm contest, but anybody using 1/72 is more than welcome to play.  As long as unit frontages match this is not a problem.  We had this situation at last year's game and it did not seem to make any difference at all.

3.  I would not make any decision about going from centimeters to inches untiil people had played the game both ways and actually had something to compare.

4.  Personally, I am an historical gamer and have no interest in finding out if Norman knights could beat Egyptian chariots.  I vote that we pick a period - Classical, Biblical, etc. and go with that.  This is something to be discussed with the whole group obviously - possibily at the general meeting in August.

5.  Yes, it would be nice to put together a couple of starter armies and allow people who do not have figs to join in the contest.  This is all about building the hobby.

Thanks Jim! I appreciate all the thoughts.  My thinking regarding the inches/centimeters thing was that the easy solution would be to simply make up and provide a bunch of movement sticks for players to use.  It would be rather labor-intensive, as they say, but probably no more than an afternoon's work to cut some wooden dowels, mark off the units and run some masking tape around it and spray paint. But whatever the club decides is fine by me.

Tim,

I will attach the Dadie and Piombo tournament rules.  Of course, you do not need to use them and can organize the tournament however you would like.

For your points..

1. Full Impetus, 300 points is my preference.

2. 25/28 is good with me but I am fine if others want to use armies of different sizes.  I may have some 6mm figures around there somewhere......:^)

3.  Centimeters using movement sticks and gauges is my preference.  Less confusing, in my mind.

4.  I'm with Jim on this.  How narrow of a time frame you go with may affect me, though.  So please let the group know ASAP of the period choice.  Any period that allows me to use Persians is good with me.  But I can build for a different period regardless.

5. Having figures ready for those who need them is always a good thing.  Those you mentioned are good as long as the time period you choose fits the armies.

Additionally, there are some rule changes and amendments in the extra supplements.  And there are some coming in early fall with extra 4.  Medium cavalry being able to evade and missile troops getting defensive fire when being charged (like a pilum throw) are two that I have learned of.  And will you allow the BETA lists on the D&P site as legal?  Lots of possibilities there.

I have extra 1 and 2 if someone needs info. from those.  And I plan to purchase 3 and 4 when available.

Thank you,
Ken

All I have is the Impetus rule book. I'll eventually get the other 4 supplements and finances allow.

We'll stick with the centimeters, then. No problem at all.

At the moment, I am all for limiting the lists to as we did last year, with a cutoff at 600ad, though cutting that back further to maybe 500ad might be better. Hard to say right now.

The question of which amendments to incorporate is one we ought to discuss. At the moment, I hope to be able to finalize any details at or right after the 6 August meeting so as to get the word out soonest to the great gaming community.

For initial planning, I am working on having 12 players and 6 tables. That will, of course, change as registrations come in, etc. However I need a base number to start with, and that seems as good as any. Better to err on the larger number than on a smaller, etc etc.

  Thanks to everyone!

  Two other points for consideration.

I'm not going to play in the tournament, unless there is a need for more players. I'm thinking it easier for me to be available for anything that comes up, rules questions, decisions, etc.

I'd also like to hear from folks about the issue of terrain. The rules suggest 4 pieces per board for 28mm 300pt games, and 1-day tournaments. My own idea is to simply set out the appropriate number of tables with the terrain in place, and let the winner of the initiative (attacker/defender) choose which long side to take.

  Comments?

Your terrain system is what Jim did last tournament and it worked out just fine.  I have heard that the terrain placement system in the rule book is weak.  I'm not so sure that is the case but I am all for simplification.  I wouldn't mind there being a variety of boards to fight no.

I remember in Armati that you bought terrain pieces as part of your army.  That way if you had an army that did better in bad terrain you could customize the board to help your army out a bit.  I was always terrible at terrain and choosing the right pieces.

Yes, I was going to design the boards so that each one had a different sort of terrain involved. Nothing major, but sufficiently different so as to provide some variety.

1)  I like the idea of using the Full rules myself as it can offer out more variety in armies, even if from the same list.  It will probably offer a bit more of a challenge as well.

2) I guess I was a bit surprised at how much smaller the 20mm really did look but I do hope we're able to still use them for next year as the basing is the same.

3) I like the idea of the movement sticks and can certainly pitch in from down south to help make some.  (Official 2nd annual Impetus Movement sticks?)

4) I liked the time frame that was used, I think too narrow and it might alienate people.

5)  i think that the 'Loaner Armies' would be great.  Perhaps even some sort of a Basic Impetus Demo going on too?

6) - Is this still going to happen on Friday?  I'd prefer it myself.

Dan,

I have no problem with folks using the 20mm minis for this tournament, especially if it's all folks have, or it gets them to come up and play. I am thinking that 1/4" round wood dowels, cut to 18" lengths, then banded every 2cm would be fairly easy to crank out. Otherwise, plastic rulers or tape measures, etc.

Here's another question for consideration:  Should the tournament supply the dice?  Maybe consider giving dice sets to participants or as prizes? The reason I ask this is because we could easily order specific color/colored sets from Chessex. They will also do custom dice sets and the costs are quite reasonable. Not mandatory, but it saves the players from having to bring them along, etc.

I not sure which way to go. I like the full rules a lot, but the BI armies are much easier for folks to get into (Celts need 10 FL at 300 points to be legal, but the BI list only requires 4 FL). As we haven't even got any game of the full rules in (or BI) since the con we should give this more thought. Also, what about holding the tournament on Saturday as opposed to Friday. A lot of folks can't get there at 10:00 AM on a Friday. I don't know if there is space for this?

Dan, I have no problem with you using 20mm because you based at the 28mm standard.

As the  space coordinater for Huzzah, I can say that moving to Saturday is pretty much an impossibility... we already have space issues  with 12-15 game spaces plus board gaming and the FOW tournament that wishes to exist on Saturday...

I recognize that the space requirements for Impetus may be smaller, but we are still dealing with space limitations, an early period on Friday is the best possible time slot for it now that I can see...

I'm sure that moving the tournament to Saturday might bring in more players, but its not an option for us at the current venue.  Now, if we can bring in more people, get paying attendees up a bit, then we have options!

I'm actually OK with the tournament being on Friday.  I do have to take a day off from work but what better excuse than to game?  And there is something to being the "kick off" event for Huzzah.

Saturday would probably bring in more players for the tournament but not, necessarily, Huzzah over all.  And there is that nagging space issue. But for Friday....

Could the Impetus tournament improve Huzzah's Friday attendance?  If we did some promoting for the event and made it more "showy" could that generate more interest in full weekend attendance for Huzzah?  I might have to put some thought into this.

I figure we have about 6 weeks to finalize the tournament's foundation questions:

  1.) Basic Impetus or Impetus

  2.) Armies permitted

  3.) Number of rounds: 3 or 4

4.) Starting time: 10am or Noon.

Beyond that, everything else is simple detail work that can be done in the intervening months prior to the convention. I figure that we could likely have this hammered out by the end of the August 6th meeting, or shortly thereafter. That gives us time to put together a PR release for the various boards/forums and manufacturers, etc, as well as get listed with the Impetus Tournament list for next year.

I understand the argument for using Basic Impetus, and am fine with that if that is what the majority would like to use. If the vote is for Impetus, then that is fine by me too.  One thing I could offer is to consider running the Tournament with Basic Impetus, then scheduling a large, multi-player Impetus game for Saturday or Sunday. Just a thought.

I'd more likely participate if Basic Impetus is used, yet if full rules attract more players that might make sense.

How long are the rounds and is there a difference for this depending on basic versus full?

The tournament rules suggest 1.5-2 hours per round.  Depending upon which is selected, certain rules for the end of the game apply. That's using the full Impetus rules.

Most Basic Impetus games can also be easily played top a conclusion in 1.5 hours as well.

If the tournament ran 4 rounds, and was scheduled to start at 12 noon, it would run until 8PM. We could have 4 1.5 hour games, with 1/2 hour between each. Alternately, we could run 15 minutes between the 1st & 2nd rounds, and 3rd & 4th rounds, with 1 hour between the 2nd & 3rd for meals/snackage, etc.

Just things to consider, ideas being tossed out for discussion, etc.

Does the game session on Friday night usually start at 8pm?

The Friday game session begins either at 7 or 7:30pm.... goes to 11.
