Impetus Tournament.
Alright, time for a status report.
I've got tentative notice of 3 players for the tournament to date. Hopefully that will increase.
Regardless, I am currently building 4 tables to accommodate 8 players. I can add a 5th if needs be.
The materials for the gaming boards are all ordered and on the way to my house. The only thing I need to still purchase is some more latex paint for the base colors. I've got shakers of turf and fine ballast, and a large bottle of scenic cement. I also need to buy a trigger spray bottle for the cement, but that I can get at CVS or the dollar store when it's time to start painting.
I changed tack from using the blue foam insulation board. Instead, I'm using modular compressed-foam (3/8 in thick) floor mats. These come in 24" square interlocking sections, with trim pieces to square them off and make them look nice. I got a heck of a deal on them from the factory so I pulled the trigger on them. I have enough sections and trim pieces to make 4 4X6 gaming surfaces. These will be given a base coat of latex primer, then some dry brushing and then various types of flocks and ballast added for texture.
I'm looking at 3 green/earth type boards, and one arid/desert board for to keep the Persians & Macedonians happy. :)
Once the boards are done, I'll finish some hill sections and trees, rocks, perhaps the odd hut.hovel.
I've also got a great deal on bulk 6-sided dice. I have enough for 10 sets of 10D6 plus a dice bag, so there will be free dice for each player as a token award for showing up.
If there's anything else that needs to be done, let me know. I hope to have one of the game boards finished to show at the March 10th game day in bath.

Tim - sounds fantastic. My Macedonians are pounding their shields in their anxiety to get at those Persians!
Jim,
Well....... everything has arrived. Tomorrow (29th) I'll set up a construction area in the living room and get to work. I plan on having at least one of the game boards at the March 10th Games Day so you can take a look and offer suggestions, etc. I might have more done by then depending upon my schedule, et al.

Hi folks. Just a quick note to let you know that I've been in contact with Tim Kindred and he is busy in the workshop preparing tabletops for the Impetus tournament. The good news is that the tables will be very pretty. The other good news is that he still has room for more players!
Last year we had a small but enthusiastic group for the tournament, and the trash-talking was great entertainment for the rest of us. Where are you ancient players this year?
" Where are you ancient players this year? "
Geeez, I'm old but I'm not ancient!!
This year has been a tough one for me time wise. Things have not worked out for me like I would have wanted. I had intended to build a Sassanid army and I've gotten only a single unit done. So I will not be bringing those guys.
For my Achaemenid Persians, I am rebasing the entire army so they will look more presentable on Tim's tables. They will be marching forth, in all their glory, ready to do battle with whatever army dares to oppose them. Could it be that others are.....afraid??? to pit their armies against the might that is Persia??
I realize that their is a certain "futility" of facing the Persian army but their is no shame in coming in second place. I encourage all to bring an army, engage in mortal combat against worthy foes, and reap the laurels of victory.
Ken
May I remind our benighted heathen friend that the "laurels" of victory were a Greek invention and they will be resting upon my brow as my troops stand amidst the wrack and ruin of the Persian rabble, I mean army.
Alas, I do not think I will have time to rebase many of my troops, but I was thinking of decorating the stands of my Companion Cavalry with Persian corpses.
See you on the field of battle Darius!
Jim (Alexander)
Ahhhh, the fair haired and soon to be footstool from the west dares to speak. It is true that the Greeks did invent a great many things. Apparently an over inflated sense of superiority was one of them.
Come if you wish, my Macedonian friend. The Persian hosts are always ready to receive guests to Persian lands. But do not think ill of Persian hospitality as we prepare your accommodations in the slave markets, my hot headed young friend.
I actually like the idea corpses on bases. I wonder where I can find some in a short amount of time??
Ken
Darius - if you are looking for corpses simply glance at the foot of your throne. We understand in the West that you do not tolerate free men and free speech, but eliminate any of the lickspittles that surround you at the slightest sign of independence.
Remember Gaugamela!
You speak of freedom yet you come to conquer all the world under Macedonian boots. You "unified" Greece through war and conquest. You build cities with names that mean to spread your glory. You cut knots when the gentle art of thinking is required. You call yourself "great" when that title only belongs to Cyrus, a Persian. Free men and free speech are myths still clung to by so called "democracies" in Greece.
I implore all who stand against tyranny to field an army to stop this madman from Macedonia. Fight for your freedom and for your lands. Basic Impetus is the rules of war. Free for the taking along with lists for your armies. WWW.dadiepiombo.com/basic2.html
Join Persia in it's quest to quell Alexander's temper. And please bring us a little earth and water. Just to show we're "united" in our cause.
Darius aka Ken
Yeah, well,
So far you two are the only ones who have signed up for the tournament. As it stands now, I'm giving serious thought to just calling it off. I don't mind putting in the time and money and all that, as I can recoup a lot of it and other stuff i can use myself. That's no problem.
However, I can't see coming down to Portland and buying a room for the night and the related expenses with only two players.
Don't get me wrong, you two are the BEST two players there are for Impetus, and can give anyone a run for their money.
But I've also got a lot of other things that need to get done too and if there is not anymore interest than this, then I'm not certain we should keep going with it.

Tim Kindred
Tim, I have not officially signed up, but I am planning to join the tournament. I am reading the rules as I speak. Jim has a Roman army he has graciously offered as a command in the tournament.
Chris
Okay then.. we have THREE! Can I get a fourth?
OK what are the actual hours of the tournament and will it be basic or printed? I might be tempted to jump in if an army can be provided and you promise not to hurt me during the firs tound (never played).
Chris Parker
I have an Early Imperial Roman army that someone can use, and can also provide a Republican (Caesarian) Roman Army or I think we can gin up a Celtic Army from the Sabis stuff we have.
tournament runs 3 sessions, 10-5 on Friday.
The rules are Basic Impetus and can be downloaded for free from the website here:

Chris

Great

I'm in as well. I didn't even bother to sign up because the Tournament wasn't even on the PEL last year. I assumed we were relegated to second class citizen again. So that makes four. I've been painting figures all month to get ready.
Tim - make sure you bring your army so if we have an odd number of players you can jump in.
So okay then, we have 5 and that means I need to get my other army up and running in case we don't have a 6th.......
Time to start painting again then.....
Should I back out?
