Game Day Ticket Auction
Alright everyone, I come here today to solicit some opinions, thoughts, musings, etc
So at the business meeting after the Flea Market of the 6th, we hashed out many things, one of which touched on details of the future of Game Days...
One of the details discussed was the Ticket Auction. It was pointed out that the supply of 'Primo Stuff' we have to Auction is running thin, and we need to bring in a new supply... The end all of that discussion was that we need to move to a point where the Ticket Auction creates sufficient proceeds to basically cover the cost of the Game Day(s).
So what I am looking on opinions for is this - it has be proposed that we allow participants to submit items for auction AND get a cut of the proceeds...
So for example you could submit for auction an item which you would like to get some money for, rather than just give away; and you would get a percentage of the Auction proceed for that item, the rest going to the club for the Game Day expenses...
So here are some questions I would like the opinions to be directed around?
Would it make you more likely to contribute items to the Auction?
If we had a Ticket Auction at Game Day without a flea market table would that make you more or less likely to contribute Auction items?
What kind of split would you think is fair?
Would you be more or less likely to bid on an item if you new that the 'consignor' was getting a cut?
Would you be more or less likely to bid on an item if you could NOT see how many tickets were already in the bin?
And any other thoughts you have on the subject... In all likelyhood we will be moving to this format for the October game day as a test... so speak your piece now and have an impact on what the final product looks like.
Your thoughts and opinions eagerly awaited.... and thanks in advance for same

For those not having been to a "game day" before, is the "ticket auction" the same thing as the ticket drawings done during Huzzah?
Yes, the ticket auction at game day is basically the same thing, though most of the items are donated by club members.
Yes in principle that is correct, fewer items, most of which have been donated in the past (by members or vendors) - but same basic idea. Tickets into basket for each item drawing held before the second game session starts...

Ooh a stereo answer - and consistent too....
Tim,
For what it is worth here are my thoughts on the four questions that you put forward in your initial query.
1. I think the Ticket Auction and the Flea Market are separate events. I might be willing to put something in the ticket auction on which I might only make a couple of bucks, but I also want the opportunity to showcase items to other gamers that I might want several hundred dollars for - an amount that would never be generated by the ticket auction.
2. If the goal is to raise enough money to cover the cost of game days then the "club" should take the first five or ten dollars that is being bid for each item with the remainder going to the person donating. Items of greater value will then generate more money for the person donating. This will encourage people to put higher value items in the auction.
3. I really don't think people mind if someone who donates something to the auction is getting a piece of the action. If the person donating does not want any of the proceeds, then put a little note on the item saying all the money is going to the club. That might motivate some people to throw an extra ticket in?
4. You have to let people see the tickets. That's half the fun; trying to figure out which item you have the greatest odds of winning.

The current ticket auction (for Game Days) might be a little stale. We've drawn down all the good stuff people were willing to donate completely. Maybe this will encourage participation by some new people to donate items.
I'd keep it simple. 50/50 is simple. I like the idea that the person donating the item takes a little risk, wins if the club wins, sort of thing.
I definitely think that people like to see the tickets in the basket. Its fun, and I think it spurs people to buy more tickets.
I think we should keep the flea market. People enjoy looking over the stuff, remembering the fun they had, sharing stories, etc., and the person bringing it makes a little money once in a while.
Probably. I like the idea of the ticket items being 50/50. This opens up the idea of me purchasing something just for the ticket items, and whatever it makes, then the association gets half, and that way I help pay for the hall while I'm playing in two games, and getting half back makes it feel good about going out to purchase something for this purpose (since I really don't have anything to donate that I don't want at the moment). What ever I make could get spent on tickets ... lol.Would it make you more likely to contribute items to the Auction? -tim
Don't have enough things I want to get rid of for having a table. If we had a Ticket Auction at Game Day without a flea market table would that make you more or less likely to contribute Auction items?
50/50 seems simple. If someone wants more for what they are looking to get rid of, the flea market idea could be better. What kind of split would you think is fair?
Wouldn't matter to me.Would you be more or less likely to bid on an item if you new that the 'consignor' was getting a cut?
I think seeing is part of the fun.Would you be more or less likely to bid on an item if you could NOT see how many tickets were already in the bin?

There's going to be a flea market, too?

Yes we have, as a tradition, held a table or some space in the back of the hall for anyone who wishes to put out the odd item they no longer need up for sale. Its nothing formal but we make the space available for anyone who wants it. We also usually see Art Fossa up with a selection of his books... which is a blessing... except for the wallet thing...

Wayne Warner is putting up the following for the auction:
- five 1/48 tanks: two Stugs, one MKIV Sherman, one Firefly and a King Tiger. They are are painted to wargames standard with aftermarket equipment on the Sherman's.
- three 1/60 tanks: two Churchill's and a Panzer MK IV.
We're still looking for a few good items.
The ticket auction needs your help. We are trying our first 50/50 auction, which means you donate an item and split the money that it generates. The club gets half and you get half. Hopefully, everyone wins.
If you have a board game, a unit of miniatures (painted or unpainted), some 54mm toy soldiers, whatever you have that you think people might be excited to bid on, this is a good chance to move it.
Lets work to make and keep the Game Days free to attendees.
Thanks for the help, everyone.
