A Boxer Summer
A Boxer Summer Draws Near!
The multi-club participation game at Huzzah this year is going to be a recreation of the Siege of the Legations in Peking during the summer of 1900. I am sure that everyone has been following Andy Niven's thread as he rebuilds the entire city of Peking on a 1:1 scale. Now is the time to start recruiting players who want to maneuver their forces through this beautiful recreation of the Chinese capital - either to destroy the "foreign devils" or defend the outposts of civilization.
Scenario: The Siege of the Legations lasted for 55 days and we are obviously not going to recreate the entire siege. The time scale has been compressed so that in an evening's play participants will be able to recreate the major highlights of the event. There were extended periods during the affair in which little happened due to official and unofficial truces as well as political infighting between different factions in the Chinese government.
Rules: We will be playing with the Sword and the Flame rules, but they are a house-modified version designed specifically for this event.
Scale: The game will be played with 25/28mm figures. All figures should be based individually as per the Sword and the Flame.
Time: A Boxer Summer will be played during the Saturday night game session.
Participation: There will be six "Western" and twelve Chinese command slots available for clubs to fill. Unlike previous Huzzah participation games any club is free to put their bid in to fill either a "Western" or Chinese command slot. Additionally, we would like to offer clubs the opportunity to bid for both a "Western" and Chinese command. As usual clubs will be able to earn points during this game to further their competition for the prestigious Lobster Pot that will be awarded at the end of the convention.
Order of Battle: Neither side knew exactly what to expect on the other side of the Tatar Wall, so the exact order of battle remains a state secret. However, each command will be approximately forty figures (two Sword and Flame units). If two players from a club want to split a command and each build one unit that would be fine. As each command slot is filled we will let each club know what troop choices are available to bring to Huzzah!
Any club that is interested in participating should send me a private message outlining what they are interested in doing. Also, please feel free to write to me if you have any questions. A complete list of who is participating should be available to all in a few weeks.
Good Gaming

The Legation Commands Are Set!
Thank you to everyone who responded to the call. The following clubs will be defending the Legation Compound which has been lovingly crafted by Andy Nevin.
The Old Colony Wargamers will be leading the British and German contingents.
Boston Trained Bands will be leading the Russians and the Austrians.
The Fremont Grognards will be fielding the Japanese forces.
The Barbarians (with some help) will be leading not only the Americans and the Franco-Italians, but have graciously agreed to put together the Carving Knife Brigade.
With the legation commands now set paintbrushes are now being busily employed across New England.
It is time to put together the Boxer Commands - there will be hordes of Boxers and Imperial Chinese needed to overrun the western legations. Many people have already volunteeered, but more are needed, so please contact me if you would like to create a Boxer contingent for the game.

Against the warnings of logic, experience and the protests deep within my own soul, I'll volunteer to paint some of the chinese...
Don't worry, Liam- these are the pre- Maoist Chinese.....
Good man Liam - I will get back to you soon about what is needed, but if you have any preferences, please let me know.
I've no particular preferences so whatever will be most helpful.
Hi Jim ...
I'm looking into getting some of the Boxer figures from Redoubt Enterprises to help out with the Chinese side of things. If I recall correctly, there was mention of doing 40 of them?
I'll send you a note on some of the things I was considering and see what your view of those are.
Calling For Chinese Commanders:
Many people have expressed interest in painting some Chinese forces for our Boxer game. The following is a list of the initial Chinese forces. Please let me know what you would like to paint for the game.

Please let me know what you would like to bring to Huzzah!
I have, on order, 20 Imperial rifle figures and 20 Boxers with pole arms. Should be arriving soon. Use them how you wish, oh great and mighty general.
Ken
I have 20 Boxer Swords (mixed with polearms/spears) and 20 Boxer Rifles (including some Jingals) on order from Redoubt Enterprises. This is my first priorty for painting once they arrive.
Also ordered 18 Kansu Braves, a leader, and a drummer, and these are relatively uniformed and might paint up quickly, but we'll see.

If I can get those Kansu Braves done, and they get used as some more Boxer rifles, then with Bluemoose's 20 Imperial rifles and 20 Boxer polearms (as spears?) it looks like General Fu-hsiang fanatical Moslem Kansu Army might only need a unit of Irregular Cavalry recruited from somewhere.
